Attending a Language Courses may have very different objectives. While some students have a particular predetermined (e.g. professional or social) need in acquiring the language, other students are more attracted from the cultural or social image of the originating country. For example students attending a French Language Course in many cases are not attracted by the French language as such, but more by the associated image and perceived atmosphere of France. Based on this some language courses put more emphasize on blending the language learning process with a significant focus on cultural and social interventions. Based on the survey 68% of all participants highlighted this experience based focus to be more important than the language learning as such.

Second Language Acquisition - Dogme & Direct Method
Despite common practice in a lot countries and Language Curricula, Second Language Acquisition is fundamentally different than Primary Language Acquisition. In Second Language Acquisition the Learner references the new language (in different ways depending on age) to the first language. Furthermore Children education on Second Language is different to Adult education. In general Children-learner tend to process second (or third) languages in ‘parallel’ (creating an own pattern) while adults tend to process second (or third) languages ‘sequential’ (associated to the patter of the Primary Language). (The detailed differences are not subject to detailed illustration in this article.)
To significantly improve the Learner’s progress of Adults requires a) leveraging on existing “Language learning experience” and b) tapping into Language Learning methods of Primary Language Acquisition. It remains very difficult to extrapolate generic models due to different learning type personalities but the Dogme & Direct model are interesting methods to consider for learners (and instructors).
Language Learning Survey Result in Singapore
Based on the latest survey conducted in Singapore (73% female, 27% male – average age 21.84 years) the most important reasons for learning an additional language are travel and because it is fun. In average the sample of Singaporeans speak 2.56 languages. Within the learning process 51% evaluated video content as the primary learning material. Interestingly 46.15% highlighted that “Friend recommendation” is the primary decision criteria for the Language School selection.
