Language interpretation requires a number of skills and competencies.
Sound knowledge of the language that you are interpreting in is a must. The interpreter should also have the ability to effectively communicate in that language. Knowing complex terms or having the skill of explaining them in both the languages is a very important part of interpretation.
Interpreting skills include the ability to identify the suitable style or method of interpretation. Interpretation needs to be done in such a way so that key pieces of information, emotion, and so on do not get omitted or distorted. Excellent listening, good memory, and accuracy are all part of good interpretation skills.
Effective Communication is at the fore of good interpersonal skills. Being polite and considerate, having respect for the other person, and being sensitive to different cultures and religions are all key qualities desired in an interpreter.
Other skills that provide for exceptional language interpretation include the ability to acquire additional and specialized knowledge about the foreign language. The interpreter should have full knowledge of certain subject matter and should be completely familiar with the various terminologies. Most importantly, an interpreter should be completely unbiased on his role.
